What if the seeds of difference are already in place awaiting activation?

My late husband had a form of Muscular Dystrophy called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Neither of his parents had any characteristics of that disease, but, unbeknownst to them, both had the recessive gene which increased the chances of Keith’s outcome.

Recessive is a quality found in the relationship between two versions of a gene. Individuals receive one version of a gene, called an allele, from each parent. If the alleles are different, the dominant allele will be expressed, while the effect of the other allele, called recessive, is masked. In the case of a recessive genetic disorder, an individual must inherit two copies of the mutated allele in order for the disease to be present. ~ Genetics Glossary

He also inherited their intelligence, loyalty, curiosity, determination and many other gifts & talents to create a life of meaning despite his physical limits. His story was captured in a short film called The Lucky Mutant, so you can hear him share his experience in his own words:
