I wrote this in 2008, several months after Keith had finished his 3–1/2 month hospital stay. As I was calling around to find resources, we were encouraged to give up healing at home and just put Keith in an institution where he could 24/7 care. That would have definitely sped his demise.

While he was still recovering, we started thinking about what kind of next step healing space would help folks prepare to move from the hospital/institution to home care. We came up with a program that would educate the patient and all the folks who’d be part of the home care team (i.e., family members, friends and other caregivers) to physical protocols, including nutrition and social support with their community in the ways that help whole healing.

As we were developing this concept, my father’s health further declined and he passed in 2009. One of the elements that sped his demise was living alone. He…
